Smart Monitoring & Protection for Pump Applications

The purpose of this guide is to help technicians and engineers easily extract pump performance data to facilitate advanced diagnostics and protection with the integration of a smart motor relay.

Smart motor relays with the capability to calculate power consumption provide the ability to detect and protect pumps from adverse operating conditions.

The linear response of power consumption compared to current draw of a motor provides a more reliable indication of pump performance. This is especially important in applications where motors and pumps are lightly loaded, experience deadhead or starvation conditions.

Based on motor power consumption the following logic applies to pump performance

  • High Flow Rate = High Power Consumption
  • Low Flow Rate = Low Power Consumption
  • At light load conditions, caused by cavitation or dry running, the change in power is up to 10X more sensitive than Current.
